lettering set for GM&O’s 1937 AAR boxcars - 1959 scheme

In early 1940’s, the GM&O received 1,684 1937 AAR design boxcars as follows:

 

Series 8000-8999, 1,000 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 2078, delivered September 1940

Series 5000-5683, 684 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 2344, delivered May 1942

 

Paint & Lettering: The cars built under Lot 2078 called for Pittsburg Red sides; roof, ends and underframe to be coated with Black Car Cement;

trucks painted black. The later Series under Lot 2344 called for Wardway Freight Car Red (a flat brush) on sides and ends; roof and underframe

coated with Black Car Cement with trucks and brake parts painted black. Lettering white stencil paste.

 

Note: In 1953 the Rebel Route banner was dropped and dimensional data went back to 2” from 3” and in 1959 the arched road name took it’s

place. Black roof, ends and underframe. Lettering white stencil paste.
