The Ft. Dodge Des Moines and Southern Railway began in 1906 as an 85 mile line to service the gypsum mining and producing industries between Fort Dodge and Des Moines, Iowa. In 1907 the line electried and added interurban service. By 1918 the line ourished with added industiries and passenger service. It later went through bankrupcy and discontinued passenger service in 1925. The road eventually acquired 2500 freight cars - more cars per mile than any other railroad in America. In 1968 the line was acquired by the Chicago & Northwestern. Ft.DD&S 14001 above was built in 1933 and relettered in 1955.
