The CB&Q built 500 single-sheathed boxcars in their Galesburg shops in 1928 as Series 25000-25499. Designated XM-28, these were the rst 100,000 lbs
capacity boxcars on the Q and had an inside height of 8’-6”. Subsidiary C&S acquired 500 boxcars of the same design from Pullman-Standard in 1926 as XM-26,
Series 13500-13999. Sixty of these were still on the roster in 1970! FW&D also received 500 of these cars. This comprised one of the largest blocks of a single
type car on the road from the 1920’s into the 1950’s, with the XM-28 being the most prominent.
