Previous Return to list of all decals in this line CN Lettering for CN’s 40’ “Fowler Design” 8’-7” IH boxcars
![]()
With it’s founding in 1919, the newly created CN inherited almost 38,278 of 36‘ Fowler Patent boxcars during the consolidation of the Canadian Government
Railways, the Canadian Northern, and others. Beginning in 1923 the CN began a program of supplementing it’s now massive eet with 3,000, 40’ Howe steel
truss boxcars with 9-panel sides as Series 500500-503499 - (see over); and in 1929, 9,653 40’ steel frame 7-panel side cars of basically the same design but with
an 8‘-7” IH as series 503500-513152. Many of these series were to be found still in revenue service in 1960-62. Between 1962 and 1965 over 600 of these cars
were randomly chosen and converted to stock cars and renumbered into the 810000-810638 series. (Note: See decal sheet CN-1 for 36‘ car lettering)
Paint & Lettering: The cars and truck side frames were originally painted CN’s Standard Mineral Brown Red No. 11 (close to but a bit darker than Tuscan Oxide
Red). Lettering was all white stencil paste.
