lettering set for I-GN’s 8’-6” IH Howe Truss boxcars

The New Orleans, Texas and Mexico Railroad was the parent of three principal railroads: the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway; the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway, and the New Orleans, Texas and Mexico Railway - collectively known as The Gulf Coast Lines. This combination of railroads now linked Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, Houston and Brownsville. The aspirations to continue to Tampico and Mexico City never materialized. In 1924 the NOT&M bought the International-Great Northern, and in December of that year the Missouri Pacific bought all of the Gulf Coast Lines and operated it as it’s subsidiary.

In May 1927, the International-Great Northern, received 500, 40-ton single-sheathed boxcars of the Howe-truss design, from American Car & Foundry: 400 cars assigned Series 9401-9800 under Lot 397A with Camel 32 6’ doors, and 100 cars assigned as Series 9801-9900 under Lot 397B with National Creco 6’ doors. Cars came with 2-section 4/4 Dreadnaught ends and a Murphy Radial roof.

Paint & Lettering: Entire car painted with freight car red TCP-139. Underbody coated with Texaco Black Car Cement. Lettering all white stencil paste. Truck bolster stenciled with 2” reporting marks. Wheels unpainted.
