Beginning in 1901 and through 1917, Haskel & Barker built 16,781 truss-rod wood 40-ton boxcars for the G.N. Amazingly quite a number
remained in revenue service into the 1950’s.
Series 3000 - 7999, 5,000 cars
Series 13000-17276, 4,276 cars
Series 26000-27249, 1,250 cars
Series 32000-37154, 5,154 cars
Series 8900 - 8999, 100 cars (with hopper bottoms)
Series 9000 - 9999, 1,000 cars (with steel ends)
Painted GN’s standard mineral brown, including truck sideframes (wheels unpainted), these cars were initially delivered with the front facing goat medallion. In 1939, the goat became a side facing silhouette - some with the car side color background and some with a black background. In 1948, the medallion was changed to read “Great Northern Railway” with a black background. There was also a variation of the “G” in the full name in the reporting marks between a round and a square design.
