In January, 1937, the KCS took delivery of 750 boxcars of the 1937 AAR design with the unusual inside height of 9’-8”, resulting of a cubic foot capacity of 3,591.
Series 17000-17449, 450 cars, Pullman-Standard, Lot 5543 - delivered January, 1937, 4/5 DN, 9’-8” IH
Series 17450-17749, 300 cars, General American Transporation Corp in Warren, Ohio - delivered January, 1937, 4/5 DN, 9’-8” IH
(note: 17000-17749 were renumbered into the 14000 series in 1955)
Series 17750-18049, 300 cars, Pullman-Standard Car Co, Lot 5884, delivered November 1947, 3-4 IDN, 10’-0” IH
Paint & Lettering: Cars were painted a red-brown: TCP 181 up to 1950, then TCP 202. Underbody and truck side frames coated with black car cement. Lettering was all white stencil paste. As-delivered, the cars were lettered with KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN spelled out on the right side. Around 1953, the road name was replaced with the new octigon logo and the 1 inch lines above and below the reporting marks were discontinued.
