lettering set for Armour’s 1949 40’ steel reefers

In 1949, Armour purchased 2,000 40’ steel reefer to augment it’s aging eet of 37’ wood reefers (down to 3,540 by 1948) delivery as follows:

 

Series 1-1000, 1,000 cars, General American Transportation Corp, delivered March 1949

Series 1001-2000, 1,000 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 3300, delivered February 1949

 

Paint & Lettering: Sides painted with Armour Yellow enamel, ends painted Synthetic Freight Car Red; roofs coated with black asphalt cement sprinkled with red

granules as a non-skid surface. Lettering black stencil paste with the as delivered 5’ billboard name in Armour Maroon. Running boards unpainted.
