![]() Fruit Growers Express was formed in 1920 gaining over 4000 wood reefers when separated from Armour & Co as a result of the Federal Traide Commission’s Anti-Trust laws. This series of 40’ wood reefers, 55000-58899, built in 1920, were rebuilt in 1947 in Atlanta and repainted in a sans-serif lettering scheme. Roof and ends painted mineral red with reefer yellow sides. Repaints such as FGEX 57092 frequently involved painting the entire side, including ladders, hinges and toe kick plates in the body paint. While the roof and running boards were painted mineral red, no masking was done to the roof edges and they ended up with the yellow side color. Underbody and trucks coated with black car cement.
