As the War began to get into full swing the War Department needed tank cars to supply gasoline to the military. 863 tank cars were ordered
from American Car & Foundry beginning in 1940. Lot 2522 and 2629 were of a general 4-course design designated as War Emergency
tankcars, and as such did not have a Type designation.
Series 10165-10246, 82 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 2076, Class ICC-103, 10,000 gallon capacity, delivered July 1940
Series 11200-11309, 110 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 2522, Class USG-A, 9,400 gallon capacity, delivered October 1942
Series 11311-11475, 165 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 2629, Class USG-A, 9,400 gallon capacity, delivered August 1943
This Series eventually was given to the US Army Supply Corps and received USAX reporting marks
Series 17000-17752, 753 cars, American Car & Foundry, Lot 2521, used Type 27 underframes and given SHPX reporting marks.
Delivered between November 1942 and March 1943
Paint & Lettering: The rst group delivered as Series 11200-11234, had heater pipes and were painted entirely black with white stencil paste
lettering. The last 75 cars - 11235-11309, lacked heater pipes and were painted “Lusterless Gray Enamel”; bottom sheet, underframe and
trucks coated with black car cement, with white stencils over black and black stencils over gray. (notes by Ed Hawkins)
