Union Starch & Rening Co, based in Granite City, Illinios, owned approximately 90, 8,000 gallon tank cars under their own reporting marks
of USTX. In addition, Union Starch leased 9 tank cars from builder GATX. These cars went under GATX reporting marks. Shippers Car Co,
leased tankcars from builder AC&F, and then released approximately 65 cars to Union Starch under SHPX reporting marks. These made up the
Union Starch tank car eet which distributed corn starch, corn syrup, corn oil and (carmel coloring to Coke Cola and Pepsi, Kraft Foods, etc.)
throughout the US.
At list of reporting marks and numbers are provided on the sheet in this packet enabling the modeler to model almost any particular tank
car. It is always best to only work from a prototype photograph as the numbering system of Union Starch is complicated.
Paint & Lettering: Tank cars were painted with Sherman-Williams Tarter light red enamel on the ends and above the bottom sheet including
the dome, and black car cement on the bottom sheet, frame and truck sideframes. Wheels unpainted. Lettering was aluminum stencil paste
with a thin black outline. (Lettering set designed and created at Protocraft Decals.)
