Crossings were protected by warning signs usually on a crossbuck. Twelve foot tall above the ground, posts were 6” x 8” placed 15’ from the center of track on each side, with the wider side containing lettering facing automobile and foot trac. Cross-bucks and posts were painted white with black lettering. Later, black lettering as painted on silver reective aluminum strips tacked to the post. Until 1924, the wording “LOOK OUT FOR THE CARS” in 5-1/2” wide letters was required on the post. After that the railroad name was used.
