lettering for SSW’s 50’ automobile cars - 1949 scheme

In November of 1936, the Cotton Belt received it’s rst group of 50, 50’ double-door automobile cars, from General American Transportation Corporation. These were assigned road numbers as Series 47000-47049. As of 1932, the SSW became a subsidairy of the Southern Pacific Company, and these cars were identical to SP’s order for 1,325 automobile cars one month earlier. Cars were fitted with ‘Special Devices” (Evans Auto Racks) as indicated by the 2” white stipe on the right door. Cars came with 4/5 Dreadnaught square-corner ends, Equipco Power hand brakes and wood running boards.

Paint: Car bodies and truck sideframes were painted SP red-brown: TCP 211. Underbody painted with black car cement. Wheels were

unpainted and allowed to rust and gather a coating of axle grease.

Lettering: Although built after SSW Series 47000-47049, this car shows the correct lettering placement for the 47000-47049 series 1949 repaint scheme featuring the large 2’ tall block lettering. Use data and other lettering from decal sheet SSW-6a.
