Between 1945 and 1947, the M&StL’s shops built 75, 50-ton AAR design 53’-6” flatcars, and assigned road numbers as Series 23501-23649
(odd numbers only). Later between 1947-1948, M&StL’s shops built an additional 75, 50-ton AAR design 53’-6” flatcars. These were assigned
road numbers as Series 23651-23799 (odd numbers only).
In August 1952, the M&StL received 100, 50-ton AAR design 53’-6” flatcars from General American Transportation Co. under Lot 8027, and
assigned road numbers as Series 23801-23999, (odd numbers only).
In October-December of 1955, 3 cars were converted to bulkhead flats, and five were converted to TOFC service. (TOFC flats were painted
all black (except wood decks) including trucks and renumbered into 15001-15009 series and lettered with white stencil paste.
Paint & Lettering: Cars painted with Glidden MGL-4938 Freight Car Red. Trucks and underframe coated with black car cement. Yellow fir
wood deck left unpainted. Lettering all white stencil paste. No end lettering. (Ed Hawkins)
