lettering set for 50-ton 53’-6” AAR design flatcars - as delivered and 1954 scheme

The Southern Railroad received 500 AAR 70-Ton at cars in March of 1942 from Mt. Vernon Car Company, Class FM. Series assigned was 51101-51600. Note: these cars were built with 19 side stake pockets versus the usual 14. As-delivered from Mt.Vernon, cars were lettered in Southern’s railroad roman 7” style, but subsquent repaints were Souther’s distinctive stenciled 8” tall lettering.
