lettering set for Rio Grande’s 53’-6”, 50-ton flatcars - white lettering

In 1944 the D&GRW took delivery of 200 Type FM 53’-6” 50-ton flat cars built by Mt Vernon Car Company as Series 22000-22199. In 1951, an additonal 50 identical flat cars were built in D&RGW’s shops as Series 22200-22249.

 

Between 1951 and 1954 the Rio Grande rebuilt 90 of it’s flat cars into 40‘-42’ bulkhead flats for wallboard service and renumbered into 22240-22392 Series. In 1958-59 some of these cars were rebuilt again - this time with a broader uprights and a longer spacing of 48’-5 1/2” and renumbered into 22375-22424 Series and redesignated as FB Class.

 

In 1956, AC&F under Lot 4694, delivered 100 very similiar atcars following the AAR 50-ton recommended design as Series 23000-23099

 

Paint & Lettering: Cars were painted black with white stencil paste lettering. The later Series in 1956, 23000-23099, were lettered with aluminum stencils. For this scheme, see Protocraft Decals D&RGW Flatcar-2.
