lettering set for C&O’s Standard 50-ton AAR hoppers, Class HM

More than 127,000 of the AAR 50-ton 33’ 2 bay oset hopper design were built between 1934 and 1960. The C&O acquired 27,490. (the B&O 21,300 and L&N with19,200) The type of ends varied. This decals set is designed to cover all of C&O’s 27,490 hoppers of this Class. Examples of three series are below:

 

Series 49000-49999, 1,000 cars, Pullman-Standard Mfg, Lot 5781, delivered October 1944

Series 50000-52999, 3,000, cars , AC&F 2264, P-S 5674, GATC 2945, AC&F 2703 - delivered between September 1941 and May 1942

Series 56000-59999, 4,000 cars, P-S 5781, GATC 2945, AC&F 2703 - delivered January 1945

 

Starting in 1934 and through July 1946, C&O‘s series for Class HM hoppers ran from 47000 to 135499

 

Paint & Lettering: Cars were painted black. Lettering was all white stencil paste. Reporting marks were 9” and road name were either 7“ or 9” lettering. The ‘C and O for PROGRESS’ slogan did not appear until April 1948, placed on the right hand side.
