By Autum of 1940, Santa Fe’s West Wichita shops had converted 4,100 Class Rr-W, X, Y, 2, 3, and 4 wood reefers into modern all-steel refrigerator cars. After
the rebuilt Class Rr-27, 500 more were rebuilt into Class Rr-28 reefers, and became series 35000-35499 (followed with an additional 500 in what became Rr-32
Class 35500-35999. The Rr-28’s were the .rst refrigerator cars to receive the straight-line map (they were also without the “SHIP” before “Santa Fe”. These and
the Rr-32 were essentially carbon copies of the Rr-27’s with minor changes.

At the end of 1943, periods between S.F.R.D. were dropped for the simple SFRD reporting marks. Cars were painted Santa Fe reefer orange with black car
cement applied to the roof, ends, under door toe kick, ladders, underbody and truck sideframes. Wheels were left unpainted.

Additional information can be found in the very comprehensive Santa Fe Modeler’s freight car series, Vol Two, Ice Bunker Cars, by Richard Hendrickson, Keith
Jordan, John Moore and Dean Hale. Lettering and and monogram created at Protocraft Decals; map and slogan art by Jay Miller

Background color shown above is not included in decal sheet
