lettering set for the 8' cross scheme of 1959

The Santa Fe built and owned 3,749 Class Bx-53, 60, 62 and 63 boxcars, all visibly identical. They were initially lettered with the usual 4’ and then 3‘ square cross and circle herald with reporting marks without the 1” lines above and below and no periods between the ATSF reporting marks. In 1959 the huge 8’ cross and circle herald was introduced and applied on all repaints as displayed on ATSF 34038 above and 35616 below, with the ‘SHIP AND TRAVEL” slogan on both sides. Cars were built and delivered from Santa Fe’s shops as follows:

Series 30000-31249, 1250 cars, ATSF Topeka shops, delivered December 1949 through January 1951. Class Bx-53
Series 34000-35049, 1050 cars, ATSF Topekashops, delivered May 1951. Class Bx-60
Series 35250-35998, 749 cars, ATSF Topekashops, delivered July 1952. Class Bx-63
Series 38000-38699, 700 cars, ATSF Topekashops, delivered May 1952. Class Bx-62
