Paint & Lettering: When delivered cars were painted freight car brown with all white lettering. By 1951, cars were repainted with NH’s new red oxide color and
CEO’s Alpert’s large all white block NH scheme. Also during this period some cars were painted black with an orange door. “Rebuild’s” saw the large all white
block lettering scheme placed to the left side of the car. And nally the ICC required the NH to move the data to the far right so as to be seen while the door
was open. (problem can be seen below on NH 36415, and corrected on NH 32046 above - the NH was slow to implement this change) See NH-3b for CEO
McGinnis’s black block letter N over white block letter 1956’s scheme on an orange car.

The New Haven’s lettering and paint schemes became complicated over the years. An excellent source of this information may be found in David Sweetland
and Stephen Horsley’s comprehensive volume NH Color Guide to Freight & Passenger Equipment, published by Morning Sun Books (1995)
